Liberty At Last!

New licenses for Long Distance & International (LDI) and Local Loop (LL) operations have been issued by Pakistan Telecommunication Authority to a number of companies. Spectrum auction has also taken place for the 1.9 GHz, 479 Mhz, 3.5 GHz and 450 Mhz frequency bands that would be used by these new telecom operators (DVCom, Telecard, WorldCall, Al-Warid), to operate their networks. PTCL has already started revising its tariffs downwards in an obvious fear of the would-be-competitors. Mobile telephony rates are also coming down with the nationwide mobile roaming charges going the way of dinosaurs. Internet bandwidth tariffs have also been revised by PTCL downwards. Very soon, the new telecom operators will use their respective licenses to bring independent bulk Internet backbone connectivities for local Internet Service Providers.

Tee Emm - firstly i welcome you back ;) long time no post - This comment might be slightly off topic but thought id drop you a line since you have been involved with the telecom industry - so can you check if this rumor is indeed correct or just deserves to be placed in the Pakistani gossip column-

When the licenses were issued for Cell phone providers - Orange and Vodacom were big name companies to pick up the licenses but at the last moment they abondoned the project - BECOZ (the rumor) - at that moment PIA was almost going to sign a sale agreement with AIRBUS and at the eleventh hour switched to BOEING due to US pressures - AIRBUS being a French concern requested VODACOM and ORANGE (French based multinationals) to boycott all future commitments to Pakistan -

PS - its a rumor i have heard through some sources can anyone attest to it
